Most people don’t have professional family photos taken often enough, if at all. Chauncey and Nick aren’t most people, though. They get family photos done at least once, sometimes twice a year. Especially when your kids are young, this is so worth it! I had captured them all together (along with Chauncey’s parents) at Explore Park back in the spring, and now the Kehoes were ready for their fall photoshoot. Even though I had seen Lucille and Penelope just half a year before, I could already see how they’d grown.
We met at Peaks of Otter, a gorgeous location off of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway. There lies a small lake and lodge at the foot of dramatic Sharp Top Mountain. The fall colors were in full bloom for us as we explored the path surrounding the little lake. Chauncey had made sure the family looked the part with subdued reds, warm ochres, and blue denim in their outfits. Little Lucille and Penelope each had a cute bow to pull back their blonde hair.
As we wandered the paths, the girls took every opportunity they could to investigate points of interest along the way. In between family hugs and kisses, Penelope was leading Lucille along little adventures. She peered over the edge of the grass into the lake, searching for fish as Chauncey cried “Too close, P-Rose!” The girls took turns climbing trees and peeking from behind branches. They picked up sticks and knocked them against young trees to send yellow leaves falling to the ground like confetti. Nick and Chauncey watched their girls carefully, but with pride. They obviously adored their youthful sense of curiosity and wonder about the environment around them. I enjoyed it, too. Kids are always reminding us to slow down and look at the world in new ways!
Our session took place just before sunset, so the longer we stayed the lower the sun sank towards the mountain ridges. Its rays made the leaves glow even more magnificently in tones of yellow, orange, and red. It was the perfect end to a lovely autumn day with this sweet family.
