After a week full of rain, it was finally a perfect June day in Maine - sunny skies with a cool ocean breeze. Gordon and Kyra couldn’t have picked a better day for their wedding in Portland, Maine. I actually met Kyra and Gordon when we were all living in Roanoke, VA, and then we each made our way up to New England. They share passions for weightlifting, outdoorsy adventures, and cats, just to name a few. They know how to work hard for their dreams, but also how to relax and enjoy life. I was so honored to capture their wedding, especially since Kyra is a very talented photographer herself! Before the celebrations, they gathered with close friends and family on Munjoy Hill to get dressed and prepare. Hair was brushed and braided, bowties were attempted, and buttons were fastened as the finishing touches. The boys cheers to drinks that had been poured into horns. At last, it was time.
A small party of guests met downtown at the Portland Schooner Company dock where we waited to board the gorgeous schooner called Wendameen. Then, the procession down the dock began and Gordon finally got to lay eyes on his bride for the very first time. As Kyra processed down towards the boat with her father, dear friend of the couple Charissa Morrison played acoustic guitar and a beautiful song that set the perfect mood for our voyage to come.
And so we set sail into Casco Bay. There was a chill on the water, so everyone bundled up and the kids snuggled up close to parents and grandparents. Though the breeze was cool, it meant that the boat crew could open the sails and let us peacefully meander through the waters and avoid using the droning engine to propel us. It was so tranquil, and we all spent the first part of the trip just taking in the gorgeous scenery and scanning the water for seals.
Finally, it was time to do what we had all come to do. Kyra and Gordon stood at the prow of the boat together to recite their tender, tearful vows, exchange rings, and finally seal it all with a kiss. It was just perfect. And then the coolers opened, drinks were had, and hugs were given.
Upon returning to the Portland harbor, we grabbed a whole-boat photo before disembarking and capturing some family photos. Then, we all walked the conveniently short distance to RiRa Irish Pub for the reception. Kyra and Gordon shared all of those special moments with their guests - first dance, dinner, a speech to thank everyone for coming, cake cutting. The vibe was so relaxed but still energetic, which made for a fabulous time for all! DJ Joe Farren really got the dance floor moving as the night grew dark outside. My favorite reception moment, though, was the last song of the night when Kyra and Gordon danced together again. They were so in sync, so tuned into each other with such contentment, that I couldn’t help but tear up myself. Congratulations to the coolest, strongest, chillest couple I know!
