I’ve never been pregnant myself, and I do know many people can feel in the third trimester like they are just done and ready to have their baby. They’re hot. They can’t sleep. Their back aches. They’re anxious to finally meet the little one. Fair enough!
But to me, late pregnancy, seems like it can also be a magical time. Especially when it’s your first baby, amid the pains and discomforts that plague the third trimester those final days appear to settle into a special kind of quiet. Sometimes, during maternity sessions, I get the feeling that the parents are holding their breath. It’s like the calm before a storm - something wild and mesmerizing is on its way about to flip everything they’ve ever known on its head. Just as much as the baby will, they are about to cross through a portal to a new world.
And so, Grace wanted to capture this time in an in-home photoshoot. It was peaceful - just her, me, her dog Peach, and lots of tea on a sunny afternoon. Grace is a dear friend of mine, so it was especially meaningful to document her in these final days of waiting for her first baby to arrive. She looked so beautiful in the glow of her anticipation. I could see that she had so much love not just for her baby, but for herself. In her confidence she shone so brightly and I was hypnotized by her poise. Being pregnant had given her a new sense of self, and she leaned into it with such faith and courage. Somehow, in the middle of this huge life transition, she looked completely relaxed. I can only hope that the images we created together show the true admiration I have for her!
